Sweezey Lake’s 2007 Poet-in-Residence:
Taralynn Marie Mack

For the last four years running, Taralynn and her family have driven up from her home in Houston, Texas, to spend most of her Summer vacation in and around the waters of Sweezey Lake. Her grandfather and grandmother, Jack and Delores Mack, have had their cottage on the eastern shore of the Lake for more than fifty years. Taralynn, who loves poetry, decided to write about this special place and diligently worked on the poem below during most of her summer 2007 stay.

Taralynn is 9 years old and in the 4th grade at St. Thomas More elementary school in Texas. She is friendly, smart, inquisitive, and affable; and we think always nice to her younger sister Tessa and her little brother Tyler.

My Sweezy Lake Summer Vacation

By Taralynn Marie Mack Houston, Texas Age 9

Here in Michigan by Sweezy Lake,
My brother and sister and I saw a snake.
I stepped on it by mistake.
I hope my apology he will take.

My friends from Detroit came over to play.
They both came on a Saturday.
To Natalie and Dana I had so much to say.
I wanted them to stay all day!

We found some caterpillars four.
They were on a milkweed plant by the shore.
Getting them new leaves is now my chore.
Soon as butterflies they will soar!

The sunsets here are so pretty at night!
They make the lake shimmer so bright.
It is a very colorful sight.
It is truly beautiful alright!

Lots of turtles I have seen.
They were mostly green.
They weren’t very clean.
But none of them were mean

I love going to the Manchester Chicken Broil.
I’ve never seen the chicken spoil.
They don’t rap it in foil.
There is so much food I feel like I’m royal.

I love watching fireflies light up and fly!
We usually catch a lot, that’s not a lie.
When grandma sees them, she says, "Oh my!"
And when we let them go, we always say goodbye!

I enjoy going to the Brooklyn library for something to read.
On a rainy day that’s what I need.
So to go to the library often I plead.
It is a great library indeed!

It’s fun to see grasshoppers hop.
When you watch them you sometimes hear a bop.
When I look at a stump lots are usually on top.
Hopping is something they never stop!

Our boat was in the July 4th parade with the colors red, white, and blue.
Decorating was the first thing we had to do.
With the #1 U.S.A. man, you know who,
And balloons, stars, and other things too!

I see lots of fish every day.
Seeing them makes me feel gay!
But when they see me, they usually swim away.
I really do wish that they would stay!

Swimming is something we do a lot.
For that, swimsuits and water shoes we’ve got.
My brother sometimes needs a life vest since he’s a tot.
We love going swimming the most when it’s hot!

Helping Grandpa with the flag is one of my favorite things to do!
We raise it in the morning and lower it at sunset too.
I love its colors: red, white, and blue.
It represents the country for me and you

Every morning when I wake,
I look forward to hearing the sound hummingbirds make!
When I have to leave them, I know I’ll ache.
But I’m glad they’ll be here next year by Sweezy Lake!
